Superior Colorado, was founded in 1896 and incorporated in 1904, reportedly being named after the “superior” quality of coal found in the area.
Mining was the major force in Superior’s history until the Industrial Mine closed in 1945. Subsequently, many people moved out of the area and the Town evolved into a quiet ranching and farming community. Superior’s population was around 250 until the mid-1980s. In 1987, the Town approved a proposed development southeast of the original town.
The new development is known as Rock Creek Ranch. Although the land was subdivided in 1987, development continues today. Over 1900 single-family homes and 1600 multi-family homes have been developed in Rock Creek swelling Superior’s population to approximately 11,000. There is now a second development west of the original town, called the Sagamore subdivision. Future development plans of the Town include commercial development, retail development, multi-family residential units, and single family homes.
Superior is approximately seven square miles in area has 170 acres of park and open space and 6.7 miles of trails. The Town of Superior is located between the Boulder-Denver Turnpike (U.S. 36) to the North and State Highway 128 to the South just six miles east of the City of Boulder. The Town mostly sits in Boulder County with a small southern portion of land in Jefferson County.
Today more than 9,000 residents live in Superior, and as many as 12,000 people are expected to live there by 2003.
Most of the houses were built in the 1990’s and tend to be larger single-family homes. Median cost to buy a single-family house is currently $340,724; although there are homes available in the $150,000 range.
The City of Boulder is five minutes northwest of the Town and Downtown Denver is thirty minutes to the southeast. Denver International Airport is a forty-five minute drive.
